Thank you for reading and for your comment, Reverie. It seems to me that the rebellion that you describe was a very common experience in my generation (and the ones before), but this is something that is shifting in many contemporary families.

I’m sure it continues in families today — and probably more so in those families carrying on religious practices, traditions and disciplinary measures of their elders — there are studies and surveys that suggest large numbers of teens today have a much less antagonistic, combative relationship with their parents. As I noted, a great number of teenage girls today consider their mothers their best friends. And I agree with you that this is quite different than my own experience and yours. It’s our loss.
